I can’t prove it. I have little real evidence, but I do have a strong hunch that Nayib Bukele and Javier Milei are backed by some parts of the US intelligence services. The goal being to build up Latin American economies, make them loyal servants of the GAE, and hostile to Red China.
We know that the USA often intervenes, clandestinely usually, in Latin America. We also know that US intel has backdoor access, in general, to all the major email services, to smartphones and PCs. Basically if it is online, the NSA can get into it, and in many cases has passive or automatic harvesting of comm off it via cloud applications. It’s not hard to imagine they could use those tools to stack the deck for a favored political candidate. Much cleaner than a Pinochet-style coup or even a color revolution.
In the case of Bukele, and his remarkable work in El Salvador, well, it seems pretty organized and expensive. How did they afford those massive prisons? How did he manage to pull all that together without being assassinated? Who has the balls to take down those El Salvador gangs when you could just move to Miami or Los Angeles? Maybe he did it all on his own. Maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about and there was indigenous capacity to turn things around. But we can easily imagine how a few hundred million in CIA drug money, a dedicated team of analysts tracking text messages and phone calls among Bukele’s foes, and the occasional special forces raid could make him and his team think it was possible enough to try.
Milei is impressive too. Rather than taking down vicious gangs, he assaulted a rotten thieving gynocracy that had stifled poor old Argentina. It would be easier to talk me into accepting Milei was a wholly indigenous phenomenon than Bukele. Still, Milei’s hostility to China and Russia are telling. As is his kowtowing to the Zionists.
A subtle, more sophisticated Operation Condor for the modern age. Using modern tools of mass surveillance, is a more graceful way to go about things. Install a talented leader (blackmailed and/or true believer) who neutralizes his enemies by knowing what they are planning, rather than throwing them from helicopters. When you really need to deal with a stubborn political opponent, hack his self-driving-capable Mercedes and drive it off a cliff. People will live in client regimes and not even realize it. Given how these countries had been governed, it’s not even morally wrong. El Salvador and Argentina get stability and prosperity, China stays out of our hemisphere. It certainly makes more sense than interfering in Europe or antagonizing poor old Russia.
The best part is we can get rich off this, if it’s really happening.
The ARGT ETF has been killing it since Milei won. I’m not recommending you buy. You have to own all your trading decisions and I don’t give stock advice, nor am I licensed to do so. I just like to think out loud and entertain. Maybe the gravy is already out of it, but I hold ARGT, and some of the underlying stocks (GGAL and MELI). Argentina is so massively depressed from its potential, that it can easily post a decade of extraordinary GDP growth if it should see sustained quality governance. I have other trades I want to build, but I really want to foie gras Argentine shares into my portfolio.
Make of it what you will, but I consider it somewhat likely that an unseen, glowing hand is directing Argentina toward good governance.
